DIP - Drug Interventions Programme

"Out of Crime, into Treatment"
SMART CJS - 01865 403240
Probation Substance Misuse Team - 01865 240750
SCAS - 01865 455635
The DIP team consists of SMART CJS, Probation Substance Misuse Workers
and the Specialist Communities Addictions Service. DIP aims to make contact
with drug users at every point of the criminal justice system to try and
engage them in treatment.
DIP assesses the service users, makes the right referrals and supports
people through treatment. It is possible to self-refer to DIP or to make
contact with SMART workers, on arrest at any of the Oxfordshire Police
Stations or in the Oxford Magistrates Court. DIP also take referrals from
CARAT Services based in prisons. Some of the contact is voluntary, and
some of it is not. This will be explained to service users.
When arrested for a trigger offence, you will be drug tested at the police
station. If this comes back positive for a Class A drug, you are required
by law to have a Required Assessment and
a Follow Up appointment with a SMART worker.
When appearing at court, following charge, you will be eligible for Restriction
on Bail. This is a bail condition that the court can give you (because
of the positive drug test result) which requires you to attend regular
appointments with the drug worker during your bail period. If you are
granted Restriction on Bail, the court will hear about attendance and
progress.
A DIP clinic operates twice a week and offers rapid access to substitute
prescribing and medical assistance with drug related issues. This is also
available to prison leavers and offenders released at court.
